The HSE defines a Lone Worker as:

“Those who work by themselves without close or direct supervision.”

The description in the term does give a huge clue but the reality is that not all lone workers are working ’alone’. They can be found in a wide range of environments and may be based at a premises or they may be mobile, perhaps performing a service within the community or local environment.

Therefore a lone worker may be an executive travelling abroad; a member of staff working along the corridor; or a front line member of staff dealing with members of the public; but there’s a lot of Lone Workers and they all face specific risks associated with their personal well-being; their occupation; the people they interact with during the course of their day; and the environment in which they operate.

Lone Workers are employed in every industry. Common industry sectors include:

• Retail
• Transport
• Healthcare
• Local Government and the public sector
• Housing
• Building and Construction
• Utilities and Maintenance
• Financial Services
• Security
• Sales

In the past staff would all work from a fixed office environment; a warehouse or a retail outlet. However, service and technology advances means that there is a growing and increasingly global trend for increased deployment of mobile technology and a more flexible remote working ethos being introduced by employers globally.

Working alone is not in itself against the law and it will often be safe to do so. However, the law requires employers to consider carefully, and then deal with, any health and safety risks for people working alone. Employers are responsible for the health, safety and welfare at work of all their workers. They also have responsibility for the health and safety of any contractors or self-employed people doing work for them.
